UNC professor and airport commerce expert John Kasarda tells the Piedmont Triad International Airport Authority it must acquire more land to remain competitive.

Interesting qestion from board vice chairman Walt Cockerham — a straight shooter who was conspicuously quiet during the Skybus debacle. Tell me if Kasarda answers Cockerham;s question, at least in the N&R’s account:

Cockerham asked Kasarda how the airport might pay for that, either with Federal Aviation Administration help or otherwise.

Kasarda said that airports are forming partnerships with businesses in creating developments where they share in the risk and profits.

That’s going to become commonplace, and it’s something the airport will have to consider here, he said.

I guess we’re just to assume it will cost — for lack of a better term —– a lot.
