Guilford County Commissioner Mike Winstead after last night’s budget presentation, which includes a 5.46-cent tax increase:

Winstead said he was chagrined by the results of the May 6 primary, which included referenda on bonds that passed and a quarter-cent sales tax that failed.

“If people don’t get their heads out of the sand on how they want to pay for things, then it’s going to get tough,” he said, adding that he expects the quarter-cent sales tax to reappear on the Nov. 4 ballot.

I’m not sure about the quarter-cent sales tax, but Commissioner Billy Yow’s push for a 1-cent sales tax on the November ballot, which apparently was spiked by Rep. Pricey Harrison, was approved by a 6-4 vote, with commissioners Bruce Davis, Carolyn Coleman, Skip Alston and Kirk Perkins voting against.

Update: Re Clay J’s comment, “These people need to be beaten with sticks while being asked loudly, “What part of ‘no’ don’t you understand?”

Funny, Yow’s buddy Skip Alston said pretty the same thing last night, but with a little more flair, asking Yow “which part of ‘no’ don’t you understand? The ‘n’ or the ‘o’?”
