There seems to be a little miscommunication between Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools and Forsyth Technical Community College regarding a proposed $67 million bond package.

It’s a unique situation, because Forsyth Tech and WSFCS’ administrative offices are crammed next to each other on Miller Street. So for Forsyth Tech to expand, they would have to buy the administrative offices and the school system would build new offices elsewhere.

That’s the way it works, at least in theory. Perhaps sensitive to how taxpayers would react to a bond for new adminsistrative offices, WSFCS superintendent Don Martin issued a disclaimer to the school board:

“Never in any of the discussions to this point was there ever a mention that we might have to have a bond issue also,” Martin told the board. “That’s never been a part of the discussion, and I will tell you that I have really strong feelings about this in terms of recommendation to you. We did not initiate this issue. We are being compliant and agreeable to make this change, but it should not require us to put our name and dollars out to the public to vote in this particular election coming up. It should all be arranged as a Forsyth Tech project.”
