Don’t see a link on the N&R’s Web site, but the sports section in today’s print edition confirms what everyone already knew —– attendance numbers from this year’s ACC Tournament at the Greensboro Coliseum were down significantly:

Attendance at the final, won by eventual NCAA champion Duke, was lower than the number that appeared for the 2006 final, the last time the vent was staged in Greensboro.

The same held for the semifinals, arguably one of the best of play for a conference that has built much of its competitive history on men’s basketball.

League officials, including commissioner John Swofford, have previously said they are talking with member schools about how tickets would be distributed, and other issues, as a response to lighter attendance.

It looks like the realignment panic has passed —for now. But it’s clear —at least in mind —-expansion has watered down the ACC brand and further expansion would dilute it more, which would not be good for avenue that’s locked into the tournament for the next several years.
