The Winston-Salem Journal’s Scott Sexton notes the strange twist in the trial of Timothy Hartford, accused of murdering two elderly people, one a Meals on Wheels volunteer.

Hartford and his codefendent are white; his victims are white; seven of the 15 jurors (alternates included) are black.

Hartford’s lawyers are filing an RJA motion.

Rep. Larry Womble, one of the RJA’s champions, told Sexton “he and other backers had never intended for the law to be used as a back-door way to abolish the death penalty, nor did they envision that it might be used in cases such as Hartford’s.”

Seems like there’s a lot of that going on the last two years.
