I would have expected a “Budget Cover Contest” to be a revenue generator, to help cover the budget. But then, this is Asheville. The sponsor, the City of Asheville, is not even charging entry fees. The scheme, instead, is intended to raise awareness about fiscal accountability by having citizens submit artwork. Funny, I can draw scenes of city life without understanding an un-itemized five-digit entry. Ya think maybe I need help?

Maybe a watercolor of East German cinderblock apartments could show the logical conclusion of too much government planning. How could we show that all the poverty in the world in this century is government-induced? A recent issue of the Asheville Disclaimer had some good ideas for cover art. They were making fun of a developer’s claims that he was building according to historic figure Wiley Grove’s drawings. I won’t provide the link to keep this blog G-rated, but one thing that was going to be built was an unfinished tic-tac-toe game.

I guess I’d better get working on the winning design to make sure I get a copy of the limited-edition budget books.
