Speaking of the North Carolina Education Lottery, prominent state Libertarian Sean Haugh has said, “We need education brothels.†Government does not want to suppress vice, it wants to be the sole proprietor thereof. Government, which should protect the liberties of its citizens, through a lottery tempts its loyal subjects to toy with potentially enslaving addictive games. State lotteries are often viewed as the only way to get government revenues out of low-income households living on the dole. The day the lottery went into effect, the ground at one of the local public housing developments was littered with ticket stubs. Gone are the days that education included teaching children about morals and character. Now, if you care for children, government tells you to be an example by showing them how to gamble.
The story is told of an ecclesiastical leader who declined tithing on money won in a slot machine. I would recommend that WNC do the same with the filthy lucre the state is offering. Besides, for all the programs and spiffy buildings, kids are still dropping out like flies.
