I had been taught to fear a government that seeks to train youth. As I recall, CAYLA (the City of Asheville Youth Leadership Academy) was begun after the mayor requested that the “demographics” of civil servants reflect those of the community. That said, I still wonder how encouraging children to stay in the community after graduating from college protects their liberties. To its credit, though, the program is seeking to include private-sector, for-profit businesses in its options for exposing children to the variety of jobs in Asheville.
