What do faith leaders and brewers have in common? They’re being flattered by the City of Asheville to construe themselves linchpins to help grow the tax base. Asheville wants to recruit Google. But rather than leaving the role of shifting the tax burden, to the advantage of favorite sons, in the rightful and expert hands of government (I speak as a fool.), Asheville is going to be democratic. Loyal subjects are invited to feel inclusive and show Google how aware and responsive government is.

Asheville is calling for artists, musicians and filmmakers, brewers, entrepreneurs and small-business people, educators, faith leaders, outdoor enthusiasts, students and retirees, techies and non-techies alike to join an effort to bring Google to Asheville. . . . The meeting will provide a briefing on this initiative and inform Asheville citizens how they can support the city’s bid to bring Google Fiber to our community.

The meeting is tonight at the Asheville Civic Center.
