I just returned home from nine hours of Asheville City Council. One item that took a lot of time was a public hearing. It seems that cars create traffic, and people drive cars. The more cars, the more traffic. Furthermore, cars pollute the air. The more one drives, the more they pollute. Infill development is the opposite of sprawl; and conversely. Sprawl is bad because it makes people drive their polluting cars more.

Now, imagine hearing this for an hour and a half. I realize city council wants to appear concerned, and so it will not quickly pass a controversial issue even though it has unanimous support at the outset. And yet, I’m sure there will be many more meetings in the future where I learn that cars pollute, etc.
