The estimated population of North Carolina is 9,380,884. 704,000 children would go hungry if it weren’t for schools and extra programs providing them two meals a day. The Buncombe County Commissioners recently received a report which stated one in five children, and one in ten adults are dependent on federal food assistance. Average unemployment in the state is only about 10%. There is no point in asking how many of these otherwise starved children have fancy tennis shoes, cell phones, and big-screen TV’s.

From another angle, the Centers for Disease Control claim nationwide one in seven low-income preschoolers is obese. They also define obese as being as fat as or fatter than the 95th percentile in fatness data collected in 2000.
