On SS:

Heath Shuler says the Social Security fund should not be raided. Congress needs to be better stewards of that money. The Baby Boomers are weighing in. Both Democrats and Republican have used the money to balance budgets. He supports legislation that would explicitly ban using SS funds for other purposes. Shuler wants statutory pay-go and thinks the way Bush ran up the deficit was unacceptable.

Miller agrees about refraining from raiding. People need to get back to work to contribute to the system. He doesn’t want to kick the can down the road and leave it to somebody else. The next generation will have no SS if action is not taken soon.

Shuler said the Blue Dog Caucus tried to make a difference in a non-partisan way. The vote was one of the most hypocritical he had seen in DC. Social Security needs to avoid politics.
