The College Sports Council has sued the Government Accountability Office, according to The Chronicle. The suit stems from a 2001 report the Council believes mistates the number of women in college sports and underestimates the number of men’s programs cut due to Title IX enforcement.
This is another attempt by the College Sports Council to get Title IX ruled unconstitutional. As an old wrestler (ok, not the best in the world, but I won my fair share of matches), it would be great to see this law pinned. Title IX is just like Affirmative Action in that it tells a segment of the population that you are not good enough, in this case athletics, unless the government comes in a gives you a hand. Too many men’s programs across the country, a lot of them wrestling programs, have been cut to create women’s sports just to create women’s sports. I’m not against women’s sports, but each school should be allowed to determine what sports it wants to offer without government retribution.
