The NCAA’s executive committee admits it hasn’t got the authority
to ban the use of Indian mascots and Indian team names by individual
schools. Instead, it simply banned schools with offending mascots and
team names from post-season tournaments. It also banned such schools
from hosting post-season tournaments. Said committee chairman Walter
Harrison, University of Hartford president, disingenuously:
What each institution decides to do is really its own
business.
