Mitch, I remember when Sam Nunn was running for the U.S. Senate in 1972 (I think he was 31 at the time) one of the selling points he used was that, like Richard B. Russell before him, he would be there for 30 or 40 years doing powerful things for Georgia. That, I think, helped get him elected. To his discredit, though, he bolted soon after the Democrats lost the majority, so Georgia never saw that investment pay off.
