Those who believe that raising teacher salaries to the “national average” will entice more teachers to stay put should read this editorial from the Greensboro News-Record.

Citing the state’s teacher working conditions survey, the author observes, “teachers surveyed in Guilford County, North Carolina and other states rank leadership as the No. 1 factor in their willingness to stay at a school. Conversely, national data show poor administrative support is the main source of dissatisfaction among teachers.”

Unfortunately, schools systems often rely heavily on credentials, rather than leadership ability, when hiring school principals.
