Sarah Palin’s fiery speech last night surprised and delighted the delegates at the GOP convention. NC delegates thought she hit a “home run.” As one clever sign said: “We’ve struck oil with Sarah!” Palin’s speech followed a rip-roaring denunciation of Sen. Obama’s record by former Mayor Rudy Guiliani. Many of the delegates, including Art Pope and Kieran Shanahan, supported Guiliani in the primary and were especially pleased with his performance. After the convention session, several delegates attended a party in downtown Minneapolis sponsored by local businesses.

3M Corporation hosted a breakfast for the NC delgation this morning. Sen. Richard Burr (R-NC) and former Sen. Bob Dole (R-KS) spoke. Burr was named this week in a “USA Today” article as an up and coming Republican star. Bob Dole told delegates that his wife, Sen. Elizabeth Dole, has 2 new ads running to counter the barrage of ads run by Democrats against her. Dole said his wife’s real opponent in the race is Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY), who as head of the DSCC is orchestrating the ads against her. He also said his wife has strong support in the black community, moreso than other Republicans. He predicted that Elizabeth Dole would withstand the ads being run against her.
