As reported previously, Chowan County is trying to get its fiscal house back in order after a new county manager took over in June.

The Virginia-Pilot has the latest details on the situation here. From the report:

The state Local Government Commission has approved Chowan County’s request to refinance two loans, giving the fiscally ailing county breathing room to begin replenishing its nearly empty coffers.

County Manager Peter Rascoe said Wednesday he was notified by North Carolina Deputy Treasurer Vance Holloman that the commission had approved his request to modify the loans because the county on Aug. 14 had adopted a new, balanced budget.

The two loan payments won’t be due until next year, according to Rascoe.

On an unrelated note, I spent part of this week at the Society of Professional Journalists conference in Atlanta, Ga. The Seventh-day Adventists held a women’s ministry conference in the same hotel as the journalists. Never was there a more profound juxtaposition of the faithful and the pagan.
