Terry and other parents hope their children will soon enter a school district that is more responsive to their needs thanks to the new school board majority. Their time horizon is fairly short, but they don’t have to reverse course so the cost to them of trying the county school system is relatively low.

To win back those of us who have already opted out of the district schools for a charter or private school or to homeschool our children, however, the school board must clear a higher hurdle. We have become accustomed to knowing where our children will be the next school year, i.e., in the school we choose, and what their schedule will be. We are relatively satisfied with the results and the diversity we have chosen.

My son has five years before he enters the lottery for the best public high school in the state. That gives the school board some time to establish a record of performance to win my family back. It also gives the General Assembly time to remove the cap on charter schools. In the meantime, I’ll start a high school tuition fund in addition to the college tuition fund for my children.
