After having its appropriation from the General Assembly slashed last year, the Governor’s School of North Carolina has sought funds from other public and private sources. One of those is the Golden LEAF Foundation, which is giving $175,000 in grants to the N.C. Governor’s School Foundation. That will allow the school to offer its summer programs at Meredith College in Raleigh and Salem College in Winston-Salem.
The Governor’s School is meant for academically gifted students, but as former JLF’er Paul Chesser wrote in a series for Carolina Journal, the school offered controversial seminars and courses that promoted the homosexual lifestyle to teenagers.
I ran a quick search of Golden LEAF grants, and it appears this is the first time that it has donated to the Governor’s School. Not sure how bankrolling the Governor’s School fulfills Golden LEAF’s mission to aid areas of North Carolina harmed economically by tobacco’s declining fortunes. But that uncertainty would apply to more more than one Golden LEAF grant over the years.
