As Murray Rothbard observed years ago, one of the major functions of “public education” is to help build support for the state by inculcating among children an attitude of respect if not worship for the politicians and political institutions that will over the course of their lifetimes, do so much to deprive them of their liberty, property, and sometimes even their lives. School kids are propagandized in many ways to get them to accept as good the Leviathan state and to fear and despise anyone who would reduce its power. Kids who have been subjected to the steady statist conditioning in school are apt to grow up to be adults who will support big government politicians no matter how much damage their policies are doing to the long-run health of the nation.
