Money troubles for John Edwards, via the Federal Election Commission, which has ordered his campaign to repay the feds $2.3 million. From politico.com:

In comments during the hearing, Commissioner Donald McGahn called the federal indictment the “pink elephant in the room” and asked Edwards’s lawyers whether the criminal charges might have an eventual impact on the FEC’s ruling.

While the indictment and the FEC case are separate matters, McGahn wondered whether a possible guilty verdict in the criminal case — which is set for trial in October — might force Edwards’ legal team to amend their campaign finance filings to account for fallout from the criminal case.

“This can get more complicated before it gets simple,” McGahn said.

An FEC audit had found that over $2 million awarded to the campaign in matching funds after Edwards dropped out of the race for the White House were “in excess of the candidate’s entitlement.”
