Maya Angelou is a poet and writer of some renown, so much so that she was tapped to read a special poem at Bill Clinton’s first inauguration. I find her verbal delivery annoying, but there’s no doubt she’s an accomplished writer.

So I was surprised to see this quote from her about her view that most of President Obama’s critics are fueled by racism:

“I think we are going to see a number of people who say: ‘I have no racial prejudice in my heart, not in my conversation,'” Angelou says. “But in the next few months, as we wind up to the double campaign, I tell you we are going to see some nastiness, some vulgarity, I think. They’ll pull the sheets off.”

What Angelou says in that quote is that all of Obama’s critics are walking around in sheets, but when they rip them OFF we’ll understand how racist they really are. Are you as confused as I am?

For one so celebrated for a way with words, this was not her finest hour.
