Saith the Mountain Xpress:

To build awareness, Mission Health has created a Diversity Committee, which [one Dr. Rebecca] Bernstein chairs. “The [committee] goals … are to educate our employees and care providers in ‘cultural competency,’ to identify and eliminate health care disparities and to partner Mission Health with community events and organizations,” Bernstein says.

I am past being wearied by accusations of racism applied to those who do not obsess over race and cause it to intervene in all interactions. Whatever happened to good old compassion and the Golden Rule? Seriously. Do you suppose our diversity and awareness training will lead to conclusions that yellow people prefer contusions, brown people like lacerations, and ecru people favor abrasions? Me thinks not.

She also points out the lack of minorities who work in the health care field and suggests that patients prefer to be cared for by providers of the same ethnicity.

So, if I insist on interacting only with people with my skin color, I’m not racist? Pardon the cliché, but is there anybody on the planet who would die waiting for a doctor of the right color?
