The 42-page indictment of Kevin Geddings provides a peek at how things get done in North Carolina with Black-Basnight-Easley in charge. A few classic moments:
– Geddings sends an email in September 2004 to a Scientific Games rep looking for “a good number” for what a NC lotto would generate for the state. Evidently the NC Senate needed “a good number” for use “in campaigns all across the state” but the number could not be linked to “vested interests like you guys.”
– Scientific Games paid Geddings $5,000 to “prep” state Sen. Tony Rand, a lotto supporter, for a May 26, 2005 debate on the lotto in Fayetteville.
– A week after Easley signed the lotto into law, Geddings emailed Scientific Games to volunteer his services on the Lottery Board: “If you want a foot soldier to serve who will be loyal to the Speaker, keep me in mind.”
– At the first meeting of the NC Lottery Commission, it was Geddings who made the motion to officially name the lotto the North Carolina Education Lottery. This was after Geddings had denied any business relationship with Scientific Games.
