Back in late December US Airways released the first phase of its slot swap with Delta Air Lines. The airline announced effective March 25, flights from Charlotte to Des Moines and Omaha in addition to flights from Washington’s Reagan National Airport to 13 new additional destinations. US Airways also said at the time that it would announce the second and final phase of slot-swap related new flights, with an effective date of July 11, in February.

Well, US Airways put out a press release today announcing new service from DCA to Cincinnati and Des Moines… effective May 2. It also said that:

This spring the airline will announce more new flights to Reagan National Airport starting July 11.

So an updated list of service that US airways is adding from DCA, sorted by whether the city in question was on the original list of places to be added from DCA when the slot swap was first proposed back in the summer of 2009. (CRJ = Canadair Regional Jet, a type of 50-seat regional jet; E70 = Embraer 170 large regional seats 69 and has a first-class section.):

On the original list and added: Birmingham (3 x CRJ), Cincinnati (3 x CRJ), Des Moines (2 x E70), Islip (2 x CRJ), Little Rock (2 x E70), Ottawa (3 x CRJ), Pensacola (2 x CRJ), Savannah (1 x CRJ), Tallahassee (1 x CRJ)

Not on the original list but added: Bangor, ME (2 x CRJ), Fayetteville, NC (1 x CRJ); Ft. Walton Beach, FL (1 x CRJ); Jacksonville, NC (1 x CRJ); Memphis (3 x CRJ), Omaha (1 x E70)

On the original list but not added (yet): Grand Rapids, MI, Ithica, NY, Madison, WI, Montreal, Miami, Myrtle Beach

Note in particular Grand Rapids and Madison on the original list of places US Airways wanted to add flights to from DCA. Should that still be the case, then US Airways would undoubtedly also add flights from there to another of their hubs, most like Charlotte. With Omaha and Des Moines service now announced, Grand Rapids is the largest unserved market within 1,200 miles or so of CLT. Madison ranks sixth. The coming announcement is easily the best change for service to these destinations in the foreseeable future.

Update: Here’s a more recent (3Q2011) list of the largest unserved markets from CLT, sort by the amount people sp[end flying between the cities:

Grand Rapids, MI (GRR), $15,668.87 (75.4 pax/day @ $207.71 average one-way fare)
Burlington, VT, (BTV), $15,112.21, (79.2 pax/day @ 190.72)
Oklahoma City, OK (OKC), $10,862.12, (30.8 pax/day @ $353.11)
Tulsa, OK (TUL), $10,466.21 (29.2 pax/day @ $357.95)
Wichita, KS (ICT), $9,038.78 (44.2 pax/day @ $204.32)
Madison, WI (MSN), $7,663.47 (31.2 pax/day @ $245.66)
