Very positive, very long article in the Charter Observer over the weekend on charter schools.
One thing it doesn’t get into though, is the that there are people, both in the existing educational bureaucracy and outside it, that absolutely oppose charter schools. Recent (successful) applications to add charter schools in Durham and Orange counties drew significant opposition. It would be naive to expect that we wouldn’t see similar opposition here too by those who want to keep control of education centralized. And it won’t ultimately be about the kids, it all be about keeping control of the dollars that would go to charters if and when more are established here.
