Today’s Wall Street Journal has a great piece by Dr. Robert Swerlick, who teaches at Emory University’s School of Medicine. His point is that Americans can readily find health care providers for their pets, but not nearly so readily for themselves, due to price controls. They exist in the latter sector, thanks to that well-intentioned governmental mess called Medicare, but not in the former. We get more veterinarians than we do endocrinologists because the market’s price signals are allowed to work when it comes to veterinary medicine, but not people medicine.
