There’s an old story about one of the state’s best known late 20th-century politicians and his strategy for avoiding certain questions during a live television interview with a Triangle anchor.

After a technical glitch-free interview, the anchor asked his tough question. The response? “Uh, Larry, I’m having a hard time hearing you.” The politician never did respond to the question, nor did he regain his hearing.

Needless to say, that was the end of that line of questioning.

I thought of that story when reading this account of WWAY Television’s efforts to ask state Sen. R.C. Soles about a recent house fire involving one of his legal clients. This is not the first time Soles and this client have been linked in a news story.?
