You know who was on hand to welcome Pittsburgh Glass Works to Surry County.
While Gov. Perdue might bask in the wonderful feeling that comes from new business in the state, it’s important to note the company got one sweetheart deal from the county, the Town of Elkin and the state.
Surry County: $6.5 million to buy the 416,007 square-foot building on 37 acres near Interstate 77 and U.S. 21. The company plans to lease the building, for $1 a year for 12 years.
Town of Elkin: Will provide an adjacent 20 acres and an annual grant over eight years
State Golden Leaf Foundation: $2.04 million grant for equipment and machinery
One North Carolina Fund: $500,000 grant
Job Development Investment Grant: The state Economic Investment Committee voted Tuesday to award the grant, which could yield up to $2.1 million in benefits to the company if its meets annual performance targets on creation of new jobs over 10 years.
