Lots of chatter out there about both major political parties meddling in Greensboro’s nonpartisan City Council race. Commander Hood weighs in generally on nonpartisan races in the video below.

I’ve always believed that the effort to remove partisanship from the political process to be liberal camouflage. They promote their issues as rising above the seediness of ‘politics as usual’ while they work behind the scenes to enhance their power base among more naive voters who lean right. Look at the successful effort to make Forsyth County’s school board elections nonpartisan. Anybody think CHANGE was leading that effort in order to continue the policies of the current Republican-controlled board?

That said, we have a couple of unique situations here in the Triad. Don’t even get me started on the partisan Winston-Salem City Council, which doesn’t see a taxpayer subsidy it doesn’t like. But on Greensboro’s nonpartisan council, we have Republican Robbie Perkins buddying up with liberals Yvonne Johnson, Goldie Wells and Dianne Bellamy-Small, while Democrat Mike Barber serves as the council’s only true budget hawk. I can safely say I’d vote for Barber even with “D” next to his name, were he running for reelection. Perkins is running for reelection, and an “R” next to his name wouldn’t make up for his actions over the last four years.

But enough of this. Time to go vote.
