I’m still scratching my head over Greensboro City Council member Robbie Perkins’ proposal to lend the state $30 million to speed up completion of the Urban Loop.
Here’s the key passage:
The city has about $29 million in bond money not yet spent on transportation projects that voters approved nine years ago, said Adam Fischer, the city’s acting director of transportation. Voters also approved an additional $134 million in transportation bonds in 2008. It’s difficult to say whether those or other transportation projects would face additional delays if bond money is diverted to the loop, Fischer said.
Yet Fischer told the City Council last May that they didn’t have the $26 million to widen Horsepen Creek Road. Yet we now find out that the city has $29 million on hand to lend to the state. On top of it all, voters went for an additional $134 million……
It’s stuff like this that makes you want to scream. On that note, kudos go out to council member Mike Barber, who voted against the city’s hold-the-line budget, reasoning that they “could have dug deeper” to reduce the property tax rate.
Darn right.
