The subject line refers to the following quotation by “Blood Done Sign My Name” author Tim Tyson in his N&O article on the Duke gang-rape allegation. I discussed his column yesterday but refrained from suggesting the article should have been titled “Brain Done Leave My Head”:

Young white men of privilege deployed their unearned affluence to hire black women to provide live pornography. This is only partly a free market, where people choose to buy and sell themselves. It is also a slave market, where an enduring racial caste system placed those women in a vulnerable position

Putting aside the almost verbatim Orwellianism, let’s just say the free market is a “slave market” for individuals trafficking in, well, themselves. I can see how it can be said people are selling themselves.

But can someone explain to me how someone buys himself? If you buy and sell yourself on the free market, does that make you a sole proprietor or a self-owned business? Thanks in advance.
