You will likely hear a lot of DPI cheerleading about the report released by the College Board, “Advanced Placement: Report to the Nation 2006.” The report shows that participation in AP courses is increasing for low-income, African-American, and Latino students in North Carolina. And overall, there has been an increase in the number of exams scoring 3+ in the state. Nevertheless, the performance of “underserved” (i.e. African-American and Latino) groups is abysmal. Clearly, increasing participation is irrelevant so long as their performance remains low.
