I had just finished hauling the garbage and the recycling out to the curb last night when, out of the corner of my eye, I noticed the City of Greensboro’s new recycling schedule stuck to my refrigerator door. Oops. If there’s anything worse than hauling garbage out to the curb, it’s hauling it back behind the house.

But I just had a thought. Since I live on a narrow, one-way street we don’t have the large city-issue cans that are picked up with the automated arms by two different trucks. Our garbage guys throw everything in the back of one truck, which has one side for garbage and one side for recyclables. So what’s the city saving by skipping recycling every other week on my street?

I’ll monitor the situation get back to you. In the meantime, I’m going to take a huge risk and haul my old newspapers out to the curb. Such is life on the edge here in tony Fisher Park.

Update: So I go out and talk to the garbage guys and, sure enough, they’re running the same truck they always do. They said the city hadn’t quite worked the details regarding streets such as mine, so they’ll still be picking up recycling every week, for the time being.

I feel so special.
