Haywood County has been ordered to pay KMD Construction $713,000 for uncompensated work on the courthouse. Haywood County must also pay $51,000 for arbitration. The entire remodeling project cost $6.7 million. The architectural firm involved was also ordered to pay fines and arbitration costs.
KMD claimed they did as much work as they could around unresolved design issues. The county withheld payments for unfinished work. It is now trying to get out of paying, conveniently saying it is out of deference to taxpayers.
