Durham’s far-left water carrier Frank Hyman analyzes Tuesday’s election in a column in The N&O‘s Durham News today. He and other “progressives” are concerned about successful council candidate Farad Ali. Why? Well, first off, it seems he was supported by Durham developer Garry Hock at the urging of the hated Thomas Stith, who was beaten in the mayor’s race by incumbent Bill Bell. But the real fear is something else:

Ali will bear watching on taxes. The Realtors want to head off progressive moves like the real-estate transfer tax. And Ali has also said that if the tax base has grown (it grows every year) and Durham’s needs are met (that can be loosely defined), he would support a tax cut. The wealthy would benefit most from that.

As SCTV’s Joe Flaherty would say, “Pretty scary, children.”
