From The Dollar Magazine, Apr 1851:
We have known men angry on the First of April from sitting unexpectedly on pins; from having wet cloths attached to their skirts; or because their attention had been unprofitably directed to imaginary yellow birds in the air, and so on. Can any thing be more absurd?
