Sounds like Rep. Cary Allred got a little carried away following his victory over Democratic challenger Henry Vines:

“Cary’s ridiculous,” Vines said Wednesday. “He called me at 12:30 (a.m.)” after the election. “He said I ran a great campaign and said I lost.

“I told you you would,” a voice on Vines answering machine that sounded like Allred said.

Vines said Allred called back at 1 a.m. to wish him “Merry Christmas.” Vines said Allred sounded as if he had been drinking.

“I was intoxicated with victory,” Allred said in response. He would not say whether alcohol helped fuel his post-electoral bliss and phone calls.

“I don’t think it’s relevant. I think it’s ridiculous to bring it up.”

….“I made one call, and I wished him Merry Christmas. That’s what I remember,” Allred said. “If I did call the guy twice, it was because he didn’t answer the phone the first time.”

Interesting that Allred’s memory is a little fuzzy. I listened to the audio and heard Allred repeat the “Don’t mess with Texas” line.
