That’s Union County to some.

The Union County Commission is trying to get out of paying the $600,000 severance package to the county manager they fired on Monday.

At a popular eatery in the heart of Union County, diners questioned the cash. Tamara Long said, “I was surprised.” Jack Poindexter said, “It’s a large amount for somebody to just walk off with.” Gail Sepanek said, “Way too much money.”

They question the commissioners’ decision to fire former county manager Mike Shalati Monday and the payoff that went with it. The commission chair Kevin Pressley said, “We didn’t realize, basically, how detailed, and lucrative this contract really is.”

Pressley and the vice chair went to see an attorney trying to fight the extra $200,000 Shalati nets in sick and vacation leave.

Yeah, but see fellas, Shalati had a contract which included those terms. Moreover, Pressley and gang had at least 48 hours to mull over Shalati’s contract, seeing as the meeting to discuss Shalati’s future was announced the Friday before the Monday firing. Clearly this thing had been rattling around somebody’s head for sometime.

Too bad those heads were empty.
