Even for Chapel Hillians, who believe government intervention is the answer to any real or perceived problem, this is an unbelievable proposal. The town council will be looking to tighten its tree regulation ordinance for trees on private property. That’s right – private property. The goal, according to this story, is to:

“establish a new vision statement that calls for no net loss of trees/canopy cover and an increase in trees proportional to population growth,” under the Planning Board’s proposal.

And predictably, there are plans to hire a consultant to draft the new ordinance.

Using Chapel Hill’s logic, I guess their planners would force clear cutting in proportion to any population loss.

It really makes me wonder if some elected officials ever seriously think about the appropriate role of government.
