Newsweek reports that the Edward Kennedy-supported ?Student Debt Relief Act? would forgive student loans after college graduates have worked in the public sector for 10 years.

I haven?t seen the bill?s specific language but Senator Kennedy?s press release is clear: ?Public Service Loan Forgiveness:  Provides loan forgiveness for public sector employees after 10 years.? Apparently, that?s it. Get a job in the government and ten years later you are debt-free. No mention of, say, a targeted program to encourage teachers in inner cities or health-care workers in rural areas. Indeed, there?s apparently no requirement to accomplish anything at all — except to add to the government employment rolls and taxpayer burden. Now, that?s a good use for a college education!
