One of my biggest pet peeves about liberalism is that it encourages people to attack and mock the producers in our society, to be jealous and allege they don’t “deserve” the fruits of their innovative thinking and risk-taking. That is hogwash. It is the entrepreneurs whose creativity helps us all. Here’s another example of why. Meet Rocky Mount firefighter Patrick Jackson, whose idea could one day save your life.

His new app can receive instant notifications and information about response calls – everything from a structure fire to a cardiac arrest – giving firefighters addresses and incident information faster than their radios can.

“We’re using it in our fire department on iPads,” he says, adding that iPads have been installed on all seven of Rocky Mount’s frontline engines. “When a call comes in on the 911 center, the information goes to those iPads.”

That information includes a map of the location and info on where the closest fire hydrant is. And it comes in about 30 seconds quicker than that radio.

“Thirty seconds in a fire can mean a lot, or for a heart attack,” he says.

Thank you, Patrick. I hope your ideas make you a wealthy man.
