What advocates call “one of the last affordable forms of recreation for many families” will get more expensive if North Carolina lawmakers get their way. From the Triangle Business Journal:

The proposed increase in taxes on movie tickets in North Carolina has inspired a dramatic call for action from the Carolinas affiliate of the National Association of Theatre Owners.

A news release issued Tuesday urges “families and other movie fans” to voice their opposition to a bill under consideration in the North Carolina Senate that would hike the sales tax on movies to 7 percent, from 1 percent.

“Going to the movies is one of the last affordable forms of recreation for many families,” said Marie McClaflin of NC/SC NATO. “This tax will increase the price of the movie-going experience for families, and could put it out of reach financially for some families.”
