ggHeard the other day that the Uptown paper of record lost another reporter. This time it is Peter Smolowitz, who left the education beat to cross over to the marketing side of the biz. I didn’t always agree with the angles Smolowitz pursued, but he was a good reporter who knew the beat.

Now Eric Frazier has been pulled in to do edu-staff along with, it seems, a half-dozen other general assignment topics. Ann Doss Helms is still doing the the edu-beat, valiantly trying to stuff 30-inch issues into 12-inches of newshole. In other words, just like the sports beat did a couple months ago, the education beat headcount has effectively shrunk by one.

Still, somehow, there is money and space for Jeff Elder to land on the front-page to tell us about Hugh McColl‘s swanky buffet and call one of the most limber and hard-working athletes ever to grace the ACC a Frankenstein monster.

Stay classy, Observer. We wouldn’t want you to go out any other way.
