In this essay Sheldon Richman takes a sharp knife to the idea floated by the editor of Time that the U.S. is ready for a “national service” program.
It wouldn’t surprise me if the Democratic nominee next year comes out in favor of some kind of national service program. If it takes a village, after all, to raise children, why not make sure that everyone lends a hand? And after the Democrat brings it up, the Republican will probably offer a watered-down imitation.
