Progressives think people who can’t win a popularity contest have a right to win, anyway. That is why Asheville City Council will be reconsidering Tuesday a resolution for candidate welfare. The measure didn’t get enough steam with the last city council, but it is bound to be popular with the new Progressive majority. Surely the city can find funds somewhere in its deficit to pay for TV commercials and glossy mass mailings for candidates who (1) harbor such freakish they have trouble garnering donations or (2) support ideas that would only be endorsed by persons unwilling to work in profitable ventures. If successful, your contributions to a candidate you like could be matched for a candidate who repulses you through your tax contributions. This is great for those hot-button issues like abortion. If you despise the practice and spend your waking hours trying to raise awareness about its harms, tough luck. You get to promote it with your tax dollars anyway. The doublespeak word for compelling you to support what you consciously fight, and vice versa, is “fair.”
