According to Keung Hui, Bob Geary of the Independent Weekly is entertaining the idea of at-large elections for school board seats in Wake County.

I noted the at-large election flip-flop in a previous Locker Room post. Liberals were against it before they were for it.

Anyway, Geary’s goal is to get the General Assembly involved. It would be a tough sell. The law gives school boards the right to establish attendance areas and assign students to those areas. Safeguards are already in place.

? 115C‑47. Powers and duties generally.

(3) To Divide Local School Administrative Units into Attendance Areas. ? Local boards of education shall have authority to divide their various units into attendance areas without regard to district lines.

? 115C‑366. Assignment of student to a particular school.

(a) All students under the age of 21 years who are domiciled in a school administrative unit who have not been removed from school for cause, or who have not obtained a high school diploma, are entitled to all the privileges and advantages of the public schools to which they are assigned by the local boards of education.

The law does not permit the school board to draw attendance areas that discriminate against a certain group. In addition, the law allows any parent to appeal an assignment decision.
