AT&T wanted to fill 5,000 US-based customer service positions, but the company could only find 1,400 workers that had the basic skills to fill those positions. If the company cannot find skilled workers for customer service, I cannot imagine what it is like to find qualified engineers.

AT&T Chief Executive Randall Stephenson nails it,

Stephenson said he is especially distressed that in some U.S. communities and among certain groups, the high school dropout rate is as high as 50 percent.

“If I had a business that half the product we turned out was defective or you couldn’t put into the marketplace, I would shut that business down,” he said.

Fortunately, North Carolina has a product that is only 30 percent defective.
