A Saluda man in the video poker industry testified about the circumstances surrounding money orders he collected to support House Speaker Jim Black’s campaign.

Charlie Brown Jr. admits he bought money orders in August 2003 for his mother, daughter and daughter-in-law. He says each of those family members gave him cash. He says he wrote his own personal check and sent all the money to Black’s campaign.

Brown says each family member decided to pledge support for Black because Black had helped the video poker industry.

But Brown denied elections board chairman Larry Leake’s suggestion that Brown used proceeds from video poker operations to fund the campaign contributions.

Brown served as president of the N.C. Amusement Machine Association through 2002.
